Fifth Anniversary Celebration
2006 marks the fifth anniversary of the first class of Archer Fellows. To celebrate that anniversary the Center is planning a Texas-sized reception on Wednesday, September 13th from 6:30-8:30pm. The event will be a fundraiser for the Archer Alumni Scholarship, which provides a need-based scholarship to one Archer Fellow each semester. Please mark your calendars for the event and watch your in-box for a formal invitation. If you are interested in serving as an event host, or serving on the development committee, please contact Jenifer Sarver.
Summer Orientation
This year marked the first ever summer orientation for the incoming class of Archer Fellows. Nearly half of the fall 2006 and spring 2007 classes descended upon New Braunfels, Texas for a weekend of team building, orientation and fun! In between sessions on professionalism, interviewing and preparing for life in Washington, we managed to squeeze in tubing down the Guadalupe river, water balloon relays and a BBQ with Archer alumni, a few of whom are featured above. The weekend was a great opportunity for the Fellows to ask questions of the Archer Center staff, as well as alumni and get to know one another before they head east for their semester in our nation’s capital.
Alumni Updates
Back to School
August is back to school time and for many Archer alumni that means heading to graduate programs in law, public policy, and other fields of study ranging from medicine to political science. As has been the case each year, Archer Fellows have been accepted to some of our nation’s most prestigious institutions. For example, take a look at where these recent Fellows are headed this fall.

Fall 2006: A Class of Firsts
Aside from sending out the first Archer Center Spotlight, we have reached a very important milestone in our history. This fall, for the first time in five years, the Archer Center will have a representative from all nine UT System Campuses! We extend a special welcome to UT Brownsville’s first Archer Fellow, Angelica Martinez. Angelica is an English major from Brownsville, Texas who plans to pursue a career as a teacher upon graduation. In the future, she plans to draw on her personal experiences in Washington, D.C. to show her students that participating in politics and public policy on a national level can be more than just a dream.
